Peregrine arrived with a damaged certificate, half a golden eggshell and a claim to Belladonna’s succession. Honorius had cultivated his longing for family into a political weapon. At the tribunal, Peregrine exposed the conspiracy. Aurelius granted him the office of Duke of Unverified Lineage and Emergency Bread Affairs. His royal parentage is unresolved: neither the register nor a handsome cape can prove it. His place in the story no longer depends on winning the crown.
