After dark
Valentino finds the Velvet Lily after a heatwave sends him downstream from the North Marsh to Plume City. Low lanterns hang over the boardwalk. Honey-colored light touches the canal. Piano and saxophone drift from narrow doorways.
The stories first call it an after-dark district; later evenings happen “at the Velvet Lily,” beneath a low amber lantern. The invitation matters more than the street address.
The craft of company
Rico teaches Valentino to sell time, attention and room for another duck to be the center of the story for a while. The company may mean laughter, flirting, conversation or shared dessert.
Rico’s rule is clear: you are not their therapist, their savior or their future. You are just tonight.
Vesper belongs to this scene too: deliberate attention, dry wit and a graceful exit whenever the evening needs one.
An evening beyond the palace
Belladonna’s night with Valentino connects the city and court. There is room here for a future queen to be only a duck—and for the companion to be seen as more than his excellent service.
