She kept a record of royal birthdays, debts and apologies that never arrived. Her sons learned different lessons from it: Aurelius Junior became punctual, while Algernon learned to bring flowers. Her emerald mourning dress became so fashionable that three duchesses claimed bereavements they could not substantiate.

The crown is hereditary. Her ability to silence a room was not.
