When the funny friend is not fine
Fictional launch letter
Dear Duck,
I am always the funny friend. When I try to say I am having a hard time, everyone thinks I am joking.
— Usually the Entertaining One
Dear Person Behind the Performance,
Choose someone you trust and say plainly, “I am not joking. I need you to listen for a minute.” Give them a chance to meet you without the usual entrance music.
You do not owe the room a punchline before it can care about you. The funny part is real. It is not the whole duck. Let somebody see the rest, even if your first instinct is to put a little hat on it.
