A three-year-old Son’s Day post
Reader letter, edited and published with consent
Dear Duck,
Yesterday was Son’s Day. Three years ago my mom wrote a nice post about me. Yesterday she only messaged me a link to that same old post. I guess I’m an orphan now. Being reminded that she was once proud of me, with nothing new to say, is too much.
— Newly Orphaned
Dear Newly Orphaned,
You are a grown man declaring yourself an orphan because your mother recycled an Instagram post. The orphanage has rejected your application. She is alive, and she texted you.
Son’s Day is made up, probably by someone with unsold mugs. Your mother’s repost may have been lazy. It may also have meant, “I still believe every word.” You do not know, because you have appointed Instagram to interpret your mother for you. It is spectacularly unqualified.
If you want to hear that she is proud of the man you are today, call her. Say, “Mom, I loved that old post. I was hoping to hear something from you about me now.” A man who can write to an advice duck can manage that sentence.
And if she has been distant for three years, talk about the three years. Do not drag one elderly caption into court and ask it to testify for your entire childhood.
Your manhood has survived worse than a disappointing notification. Kindly stop asking an app to certify it.
